Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213 crore IPO opens today, 21 October, and closes on 23 October. If you plan to bid from your phone, the app you use decides how smooth the process feels and what you pay to keep your demat account running. Here is how the best apps to apply for IPO in India compare: Zerodha, Groww, Angel One and Upstox.

Jio IPO at a Glance

The issue is entirely fresh, with no offer for sale. Key details:

  • Price band: ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share
  • Lot size: 12 shares, so one lot costs ₹13,428 at the upper band
  • Likely allotment: 26 October
  • Likely listing: 28 October on NSE and BSE

Eligible employees get a ₹54 per share discount on the issue price. Allotment and listing dates are tentative and could move.

Best Apps to Apply for IPO: Charges Compared

None of the four charges a fee to apply for an IPO through UPI, and all open accounts for resident individuals free. The real differences appear after listing, when you sell shares or pay for demat upkeep.

App Delivery brokerage Demat AMC
Zerodha ₹0 Free in year one, then ₹300 + GST (non-BSDA)
Groww 0.1% or ₹20, whichever is lower (min ₹5) ₹0
Angel One 0.1% or ₹20, whichever is lower (min ₹5), free up to ₹500 in first 30 days Free in year one, then ₹60 + GST per quarter (non-BSDA)
Upstox ₹20 per order Free in year one, then ₹300 + GST (non-BSDA)

If your holdings stay under ₹4 lakh, a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) carries no AMC on Zerodha, Angel One and Upstox. Statutory charges such as STT and exchange fees apply on top everywhere.

How Each App Handles the IPO Application

Zerodha (Kite)

Go to Bids, pick the IPO, enter your UPI ID, quantity and price, then accept the mandate in your UPI app. Kite also supports pre-apply for mainboard IPOs from the day before launch until 10 AM on opening day. You can place up to three bids, and the highest bid amount is blocked.

Groww

Open the Stocks tab, scroll to IPO and choose the issue. You can bid at the cut-off price or set your own, then enter your UPI ID. Groww says the mandate request usually reaches your UPI app within an hour or two.

Angel One and Upstox

Both list live IPOs inside the app and use the same UPI mandate flow. Upstox explicitly lists zero brokerage on IPO applications. Angel One suits first-time investors who also want its 30-day introductory brokerage waiver for later trades.

Mistakes That Can Get Your Bid Rejected

  • Wrong UPI ID: The UPI ID must belong to a bank account in your own name.
  • Multiple applications: Applying through different demat accounts under the same PAN gets all of them rejected.
  • Missed mandate: Approve the UPI mandate by 5 PM on the closing day, 23 October.
  • Late orders: On Zerodha, bids placed after 4:45 PM get their mandate the next day, so do not leave it to the final evening.

Individuals can pay up to ₹5 lakh per IPO application through UPI, a limit SEBI has allowed since May 2022. Applying early does not improve your allotment chances.

Which App Should You Pick?

If you plan to hold Jio shares for years, Zerodha’s zero delivery brokerage keeps exit costs low, while Groww’s zero AMC suits small, occasional investors. Angel One and Upstox make sense if you already trade there. Among the best apps to apply for IPO, the right pick is the one where your demat account is already active, because opening a new account and completing KYC before 23 October adds avoidable risk.
