Node.js 26 LTS is due on 28 October 2026, and it is a bigger milestone than the usual autumn promotion. According to the official Node.js release schedule, version 26 moves from Current to long-term support that day, eight days after Node.js 24 drops into maintenance mode on 20 October. It is also the last Node.js line released under the old twice-a-year model, so the upgrade you plan now sets your rhythm for the next few years.

Here is what developers and engineering teams need to know.

What Node.js 26 LTS Brings

Node.js 26.0.0 shipped on 5 May 2026 and has been the Current release since. The headline change is the Temporal API, now enabled by default. Temporal is a modern date and time API for JavaScript, built as a sturdier replacement for the old Date object, with proper support for time zones and calendar maths.

Other notable changes in the 26.0.0 release notes:

  • V8 14.6 (part of Chromium 146), which adds Map.prototype.getOrInsert(), getOrInsertComputed() and Iterator.concat()
  • Undici 8.0.2, the HTTP client behind the built-in fetch()
  • NODE_MODULE_VERSION raised to 147, so native add-ons must be rebuilt
  • Minimum build toolchain raised to GCC 13.2

The line has kept improving since. Version 26.11.0, released on 7 October, added Buffer.stringLength() and new HTTP helpers, isValidHeaderName() and isValidHeaderValue(). It also promoted Alpine Linux to tier 2 support and bundled npm 11.20.0 and OpenSSL 3.5.9.

Breaking Changes to Check Before You Upgrade

As a semver-major release, Node.js 26 removes some old APIs. Run your full test suite against it before moving production workloads.

  • Server.prototype.writeHeader() is gone; use writeHead() instead.
  • The legacy stream modules such as _stream_readable and _stream_writable have been removed.
  • The –experimental-transform-types flag has been dropped.
  • register() is now runtime-deprecated, so expect warnings from custom loaders.
  • localStorage now returns undefined when no storage file is configured.

Older dependencies are the usual culprits. If a package still calls writeHeader() or imports the old stream internals, it will break, so audit your lock file early.

The Support Timeline at a Glance

Version Status from late October 2026 End of life
Node.js 26 Active LTS from 28 October 2026 30 April 2029
Node.js 24 Maintenance LTS from 20 October 2026 30 April 2028
Node.js 22 Maintenance LTS 30 April 2027
Node.js 20 End of life Ended 30 April 2026

If your servers still run Node.js 20, they are on a runtime that no longer receives security patches. Teams on Node.js 22 have roughly six months left before it reaches end of life.

Why This Is the Last Release of Its Kind

In an announcement last updated in March 2026, the Node.js release team confirmed that from version 27 the project will ship one major release a year instead of two. Every release will become LTS, ending the old odd and even split. Majors will land each April, move to LTS in October, and version numbers will match the calendar year.

A new Alpha channel arrives too. Node.js 27 alpha builds are scheduled to begin on 28 October 2026, the same day version 26 becomes LTS. These builds are signed and tested but not meant for production. They are aimed at library authors and CI pipelines that want to catch breaking changes months in advance.

What It Means for Indian Developers and Teams

For product startups and IT services teams maintaining client Node.js stacks, the practical advice is to plan the move from 22 or 24 to 26 within the next quarter. Node.js 26 carries security support until April 2029, long enough to cover most multi-year project contracts.

Students and freshers should start writing new date-handling code with Temporal rather than Date, and practise reading release notes before upgrading. It is a habit that saves hours of debugging on real projects.

The Takeaway

Node.js 26 LTS is a stable, well-supported target with a cleaner date API and a modern V8 engine. Test your dependencies now, rebuild native add-ons, and schedule the upgrade early so you are not scrambling when Node.js 22 reaches end of life in April 2027.
