If you grabbed ChatGPT Go free in November 2025, your 12 months are almost over. OpenAI’s India offer opened on 4 November 2025, and once the free year ends the plan renews at the standard ₹399 a month unless you cancel. Before that charge hits your card or UPI autopay, here is what you are actually paying for, what changed in 2026, and which free or cheaper AI apps deserve a look.

When Does the ChatGPT Go Free Year End?

The promotion gave 12 months of Go at no cost to new sign-ups in India and to existing Go subscribers. To claim it, users had to add a card or a UPI app such as PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm, so that billing could start automatically after the free period.

That means early claimers will start seeing renewals from early November 2026, while later sign-ups renew on their own anniversary dates. Don’t rely on a date you saw on social media. Open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Account, and check your plan’s renewal date.

  • Signed up on the web: Cancel from ChatGPT’s account settings.
  • Signed up via Google Play or the App Store: Cancel from that store’s subscriptions page.
  • Paid by UPI: Also check the autopay or mandates section of your UPI app.

What ₹399 a Month Gets You Now, Ads Included

Compared with the free tier, Go offers more messages, more file uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory. That is useful if ChatGPT is part of your daily work, whether drafting emails, summarising PDFs or debugging code.

The bigger change came on 27 August 2026, when OpenAI began showing ads in India on the Free and Go tiers. Ads appear below a response only when a relevant sponsored product exists, are labelled as sponsored, and are not shown next to health, mental health or political topics. Accounts belonging to users under 18 do not see them. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans stay ad-free.

ChatGPT Go Free Alternatives and Cheaper Plans

Google is the main rival on price in India. Here is how the options compare:

Option Price in India Stand-out perks
ChatGPT Free ₹0 Core chatbot; lower limits and ads
ChatGPT Go ₹399/month Higher limits, longer memory; ads
Google AI Plus ₹399/month (₹199 for six months for new subscribers at launch) Gemini 3 Pro, 200 GB storage, share with up to five family members
Google AI Pro via Jio ₹0 for 18 months Deep Research, 5 TB storage, higher Gemini CLI limits

The Jio deal is the standout freebie, valued by Jio at about ₹35,100. It requires an active unlimited 5G plan of ₹349 or more for the whole 18 months and is claimed through the MyJio app. One freebie is gone, though: Airtel’s free Perplexity Pro promotion closed on 16 January 2026.

Which Option Should You Pick?

  • Students and casual users: The free ChatGPT tier or the free Gemini app covers most homework help and quick questions.
  • Families: Google AI Plus costs the same as Go but adds shared storage for up to six people.
  • Jio users: Claim AI Pro first; paying for anything else makes little sense while it lasts.
  • Daily ChatGPT power users: Go is worth ₹399 if you rely on its memory and limits. If ads bother you, only Plus and higher plans remove them.
  • Developers: The Jio AI Pro bundle’s higher Gemini CLI and Code Assist limits are a real bonus.

The Takeaway

The ChatGPT Go free year was one of the best AI deals India has seen, but it was always designed to convert into a paid habit. Spend ten minutes this week checking your renewal date, testing Gemini side by side, and deciding whether ₹399 a month, ads included, still earns its place.

Note: Prices and offers are as reported by the cited sources and may change. Check the in-app price before you subscribe or renew.
